Obituary

James Wilson Hunter Jr. of Sanford NC, beloved husband, father and brother, died February 16, 2024.  The son of Bishop J. Wilson and Nan Wattles Hunter was born May 28, 1940 in Fort Thomas KY.  He is survived by his wife Rebecca (Beck) Godfrey Thrower Hunter, daughter Perrin Wattles Hunter Matheis (Tim),son J. Wilson Hunter III (Alison), sisters Nancy H.Sherwin and Sally H. Hopper, along with numerous delightful nieces, nephews and cherished friends.

Ahh Sewanee, The University of the South class of ‘62.  Now that is where he found his Beck.  Set up with a blind date by his brother-in-law to be.  Jim remembers where and when he first saw Beck and was smitten.

Jim had a life-long interest in Lionel trains, vintage cars, Civil War and Family History, sailing, camping across America with his beloved Beck from tents to Past Tents, stretching out a shaggy dog story.  He took pride in his work ethic, consistently earning the designation of valued employee.  One could and did depend on his word.

Jim will be missed whenever we gather. He would say, “Hang on, let me overthink this.”

A grave-site service at Old St. David’s Episcopal Graveyard in Cheraw SC will be held at a later date. Midstate Cremation & Funeral Service in Asheboro is honored to serve the family of James Hunter, Jr.
